Audiology

Audiology is the branch of medicine that deals with the sense of hearing. An audiologist is someone who diagnoses and treats hearing and balance problems. Prior to 2013, no audiology services existed for the people in Ituri Province, DRC. After completing his post graduate diploma in Clinical Audiology and Public Health Otology from the University of Nairobi, Ismael initiated an Audiology service in Aru, Ituri province. This included the construction of the first (and only) sound-isolating audiology room in Northeast DRC.

As a result, we have now been able to diagnose and treat many that come come to the clinic in Aru. In 2016-2017, 646 people were consulted and treated for hearing problems. 64% of these were treated at the clinic in Aru,the remainder of which were treated in mobile clinics. The mobile outreach program is incredibly important, as the Northeast Congo is a large region, where many do not have a means of transportation to travel to the clinic in Aru.

Of the 646 people consulted in 2016-2017, 290 of them were treated for ear infections, 91 were diagnosed with hearing loss ranged from moderate to profound, of which 53 were children under 18. 32 of these were able to receive hearing aids to correct their impairments.
